A DEDICATED PRESENTATION
Richard Caton Woodville
London, 1856–1927
Captain Kennedy, 1st Royal, Capturing his First Eagle at Waterloo
c. 1894
Pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, 50 × 39 cm
This large drawing, dated circa 1894 in the gallery presentation, depicts the capture of a French Imperial Eagle at Waterloo by the Royal Dragoons. Woodville concentrates the drama in horse and rider: the animal’s powerful body, glints of metal and carefully described standard contrast with the freer surrounding pencil work. The sheet combines the immediacy of a study with the pictorial presence of a finished work. Presented by Poncelin de Raucourt Fine Arts, it reflects the artist’s interest in military narrative and memory.
