This week, we are delighted to present, as our Private View of the Week, a remarkable cabinet painting by Luca Giordano depicting The Judgement of Solomon, executed around 1670. Painted at the height of the artist’s maturity, this vibrant and highly theatrical composition captures the dramatic climax of the biblical narrative, the moment in which the true mother renounces her child to save his life. With its dazzling brushwork, rich Venetian-inspired palette, and remarkable sense of movement, the painting perfectly illustrates Giordano’s extraordinary virtuosity and creative freedom. Confirmed by the eminent scholar Nicola Spinosa, the work may have been conceived as a highly finished preparatory modello for a larger composition.
