This Sunday's Private Viewing focuses on a remarkable sixteenth-century drawing, convincingly attributed to Jacopo Zanguidi, called Bertoja, after Raphael's celebrated Combat of Five Men. Its importance goes well beyond attribution. An early inscription on the sheet appears to reveal that Raphael's original red-chalk drawing, now in the Ashmolean Museum, once belonged to Arcangelo Spagna, adding a significant new chapter to its provenance.
