This week, we are pleased to present, as our Private View of the Week, a rare early drawing by Jean-Baptiste Greuze, The Death of Coresus. Executed circa 1750 in pen, ink, black chalk and wash, this large and theatrical sheet reveals a very different side of the artist: far removed from the familiar red-chalk studies so often associated with his name, it belongs to the more ambitious, intellectual and dramatic current of his early graphic work. This rediscovered composition offers a remarkable insight into the young artist’s formation: already deeply concerned with emotion, virtue and dramatic staging, yet still searching for the monumental language that would later define his greatest works.
