This Sunday, we are delighted to present as our Private View of the Week a spectacular large drawing by Richard Caton Woodville: Captain Kennedy, 1st Royal, Capturing his First Eagle at Waterloo. Executed in pencil, watercolour and bodycolour, heightened with brilliant touches of white, this impressive sheet combines scale, drama and extraordinary technical finish. Measuring 50 × 39 cm, and preserved in impeccable condition, it has the visual force of a finished work rather than a simple preparatory study. The black horse surges forward with remarkable power, while the gleam of the armour, sword, harness and captured standard reveals Woodville at his most virtuosic.
